I’ve been wanting to dig into Unreal Engine 5. I wanted to create a tool that inspected the properties of Unreal assets for performance. I didn’t just want to create a lite version of Unreal Insights, but something that could analyze the assets in the engine’s Content Browser.
I created a tool that scans the project’s folders. It goes on to collect textures, materials, and static meshes along with their properties into data that I can work with. I used a config JSON file that holds performance metrics to check the assets’ properties against. I used a config file so that, depending on the project’s needs, the values can be changed.
Once I check the assets’ performance, I organize the findings into a report so that it is easy to follow up on any problem assets. For now, I analyzed static meshes, but now that I have the framework, I can extend it to analyze textures and materials.
As I was setting this up, I hard-coded the folder that the tool inspects, but in the future I plan to let the user choose the folder.
